4 Things to learn from a Flower Installation
As a designer, you are always in need of inspiration, always on the hunt for it, no matter the place. No interior designer (or creative person) has ever refused a spark of inspiration because it came from x, y, z place. You would be a fool to do so. It's impossible to know when inspiration will come because it hits when it hits. But what you can do in the meantime is to provide the necessary channels to facilitate its arrival.
Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes you get to glimpse at what other artists have created and you can understand from where their artistic spark came from. And if you look just hard enough, you might discover your own!
Obviously, inspiration has struck me today, otherwise, this post wouldn't really exist. What I discovered today (besides some most needed inspiration for a project), are 4 things you can learn from a flower installation.
First and foremost, let's give credit where credit is due because, without this beautiful installation, I would be right back where I started with my project. The installation is living inside the NOW Gallery in North Greenwich (just outside the tube station and close to the O2). Although a small space, the gallery is stunning in its interior, so it shouldn't be taken lightly.
"The Iris" installation, on the other hand, was created by the talented Rebecca Louise Law (literally a master of flowers - have a look). She used up to ten thousand fresh Irises hung from the gallery's wooden ceiling at different heights with copper wires.
So if you are still with me, you are probably wondering what are those 4 things I've learned from this flower installation right? RIGHT, IT'S TIME TO SHARE!
1. LISTEN TO MOTHER NATURE
Because not only it was here before you and I, she also knows what she is doing. So much so, that you only need to look. When I mean look, I really mean look. Nature provides colour palettes and textures everywhere you turn (in flowers, landscapes, even in certain animal or insects). Just by looking at these irises, you can see a beautiful palette: yellow and purple (complementary colours) and different greens. Imagine translating this into your Bedroom: green sheets with yellow and purple pillows or having your headboard upholstered in a green velvet and combine it with different colours bed sheets. Need I say more??
2. THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG
Nature does not really care if it gets something right or wrong, or if she will be judged on that! She just does it. On that note, we should all apply this rule from time to time and take some risks when we are designing. Have a play with things and see if they work together or not. Chances are, that's how inspiration strikes and things get discovered!
3. FLOWERS CREATE A DIFFERENT, MAGICAL PLACE
I don't know if you've ever noticed, but flowers do have the power to change the atmosphere of a place. Just think about how you feel when you receive / buy flowers and see those amazing vibrant colours inside your home. Flowers equals nature, and we, as humans, always tend to go back to nature, escape towards it. So there is no wonder that flowers have an amazing effect on us.
I've always felt happy and at peace around flowers. Although I am not that great at keeping them alive (just yet), I do enjoy the way they make me feel, even when I am at my worst. Flowers can uplift your spirit any time.
4. REMEMBER THE LITTLE THINGS
Let's face it, today's world is moving so fast that not only you forget the little things, but you even forget to breathe in the process. You don't need me to tell you that this is no way to live...all stressed out, getting from one point to the next...and for what? For a few extra 2 minutes, or to get to work early so that you can leave early, in order to come back home and sleep (because you are dead tired from all the work)?
No...just stop...take a breath, enjoy the sunshine or the clouds (doesn't matter), they are equally beautiful. What's the point of living if you forget to live? It's kind of waste of time if you don't literally stop and "smell the flowers". How do you expect to enjoy your day if you are no open to it? Nature provides everything you need in order to be mentally and spiritually happy.
Remember how you feel when you get to go on holidays and enjoy the landscapes or the Sun? And how sad you feel when it's over and you have to go back to work? Well, guess what? You have access to that mindset even in the city too, even on your way to work, you just have to apply it. Ok, there may be no sea or mountains to make you visually happy, but there are trees, flowers...even the sky with its clouds!
It's all just a simple use of a mindset. Let nature help you install it!
So there you have it detail lovers! A sort of spiritual rant kind of post, that was possible due to a simple flower installation! I would have loved to see it in full bloom, when all the irises where vibrant and fresh, but I must admit that seeing them in their drying process, taking all sorts of shapes and forms, was nothing less than an extraordinary visual experience.
The installation is on until the 7th of May, so get your butts moving and go see the installation. It's so worth it! Let me know your personal self-aware moment or experience that you had there below or on our Facebook Page. Alternatively, you can let me know on Instagram. I did not receive anything for writing up this post. I truly support the local artists and their passion for their work. I only share products or ideas that I believe in and that I think you, the readers, will enjoy as well. P.S: go and see it!!!
