Hi and welcome to the unveiling first blog post of the detail movement!
The purpose of this blog is to share inspiration and to help you learn how to discover the beauty of interior design ( or just have fun seeing what other people don't see at first ). And of course, to find out what fascinates humble humans like interior designers. But enough chit chat, let's begin!
When you first see something, whether it is a photo or a design ( even a product ), you instantly like it or not. Ever wonder why that is? It is said that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and that is massively true. What you like, someone else might love or even hate. It's all a matter of perspective and inner principles I guess. But I found that there is a common link between people opinions, and surprise - we do it unconsciously!!
Take the image above for example ( Little Green paint company ). How do you feel about it? How much time did you spent looking at it?
What your brain did ( in split seconds ) is 'read the picture'. And by that I mean it did the CCL or composition - colour - light. After this super fast process is done, your personal likes ( that you spent all your life building up ) kick in. That is how you are forming an opinion almost instantly.
So how does this work?
COMPOSITION is an arrangement of elements to put it bluntly. It can be anything: lines, shapes, fabric patterns, flowers, food, even socks on the floor. Put them together and boom, you have a composition! It is everywhere you look, in nature, in man-made objects, machine made objects...everything has a "meaning" to it, whether it is conscious or not. Philosophers may argue here, but...hey, they can have their opinions, and we can have ours.
COLOUR is where you really get "hit" in the face. I don't even have to say anything about it, only that it completely changes your world. Except for when the lack of it makes an impact on it's own ( but more about that in another post ). Colour has a great impact on...anything!! It helps us understand our surroundings better, and it makes us creative! It's a known fact that colours can influence our state of mind, feelings and emotions. Let's take this little DIY painting that I made as an example. The colours and the contrast between them is what makes the painting interesting. Because let's face it, how memorable would it be in black and white?
LIGHT or the amount / lack of it can shape or form interiors. For example, some people like to be surrounded by light, while others prefer a more darker atmosphere, because it adds a touch of mystery or personality. In both cases, light knits ( with composition and colour ) an image, atmosphere, feeling, memory! Light can come from two different sources: natural / artificial light or light through colour. Either way, it is a force to factor in.
So here is the catch (and where it gets really beautiful)!
Every mindset is different, and people see things differently. You can see something I cannot, I can see something my friends may not and so on & so on. Everything is a choice: the places where you go, the company that you keep, the food that you eat, the music, the clothes that you wear....These choices define you and your perception of beauty! This is why variety exists, why this world of interiors is so wonderful and vast. The coolest part about that is that it's out there for us to discover! Are you not excited by the possibilities??
Have you ever liked an image, or an interior but you couldn't just figure out why? Now that you know about ccl, you can discover what pulled you towards them in the first place. Do you have a story or an example of something that caught your eye? Would love to see the world through your eyes!
