Welcome to Detail Movement!

Hi, I'm Raluca. I am an interior designer & the founder of Detail Movement, the place where casual interiors are born for people with stories to tell. Sharing industry knowledge through the Blog and inspirational visuals through Photography. Feel free to have a look around. Enjoy!

The "Free Wisdom" Phenomenon

The "Free Wisdom" Phenomenon

When you are young, everybody asks you (at some point) what do you want to be when you'll grow up. And depending on your answer, you'll either get an "aw that's cute" (code for "not going to really happen, honey") or "wonderful" / "brilliant". The thing is, this type of reaction, to a little kid, can only break him or make him. It either breaks their confidence in themselves or it acts as a catalyst to prove themselves.

To me, it has always been the second one (the catalyst) perhaps because I've always been confronted with people telling me I can't do something. From things like "you won't make it / graduate as an architect (better quit now while you are ahead)" to "you won't make it as a designer" or anything else really. People always seem to love giving you free "advice" or "wisdom" on different things. They like to think of themselves as experts, even if they have no experience in that subject (and even more so if you do have some experience in a particular field).

But the weird thing is that it's never helpful advice, is it? It's never something that you can really take on and change your life for the better. It's always what you are doing wrong and what they would have done in your place! Unless you stumble upon those few and rare human beings that just want to share their knowledge for the pure joy of helping others (not expecting anything in return). Those people are the real gems. Those are the ones that are worth your time and energy (*side note: go find them)!

My point is I am sure that you've also encountered this "problem" at some point in your life. Maybe it's the natural way of the world or the Universe's way to toughen you up and prep you for your dreams, who knows?

So my advice to is this: always receive the free "wisdom" that seems to be a like a freebie following you where ever you go. Receive it, ignore it (if it's not useful) and be on your merry little way!

The thing is, in the end, it's your dream! You created it and it's yours to keep. Not your family's dream, not your friend's dream or the random stranger that you meet on the street or at a party (that knows if you'll make it in life or not, after 2 minutes of meeting you). At the end of the day, the only person you need to make proud is YOURSELF! Do everything in your power to make YOUR DREAM happen and not let YOURSELF down. I think that's all that is comes down to; the rest does not count. All that matters is that you went for it and that you have no regrets for chasing after your dream.

So if you want to do interiors, be a doctor or even a magician, it should not matter to you what others think. What matters is that you believe you'll be the best interior designer/doctor/magician that has ever lived. Decide your dream and go for it. That alone it will be enough to make YOU HAPPY. It's all that matters. You just have to start!

We all have a journey assigned to us on this Earth, and it's going to happen anyway (regardless of what you want). The only thing you can do is to take the necessary steps in making it the most amazing journey you'll ever have!! How? Simple, stop wasting time and start chasing your dream!

Like the famous Gary Vaynerchuk says: "People act like they're coming back"! The truth is we only have one go at this (that we are conscious about - if you believe in reincarnation), so why are not hitting the ground running towards our dreams and we keep listening to X, Y, Z and how they know all about us or what they would do differently in our place? Yes, yes thank you for the free advice but I'm going to do what I think it's best for myself (unless you have actual good advice, in which case I'll gladly take that on board, thank you very much)!

No rudeness here, just simply stating a fact. I've often encountered people who thought little or less of me (for some reason). For a while, I wanted to do everything in my power to prove them wrong. Lately however, I realised that is a complete waste of my time and energy. Why waste it on proving people wrong? What will it gain you - a pat on the back and maybe an apology if you are really lucky? Maybe, but how will that get you closer to where you want to be?

People form their opinion about others almost instantly, and no matter what you do, it's pretty hard to change that perception once it has taken root. So, better put all that focus & work on your plans and dreams instead, in order to not let down the most important person you'll ever know - YOURSELF! That's where it starts and that's where it ends, my friends.

So that, my detail lovers, concludes today's rant! Yes, I know that this was a bit of a weird post, but I had to get these feelings off my chest. Sometimes, the glass just fills up with negativity and criticism left and right, with people always knowing things better than you (even though they're in a completely different line of work).

It's easy to forget what you should focus on. So this was my way of putting a bit of optimism back into the world and say that YOUR ARE DOING GREAT!! You'll get to wherever you want and need to be, just keep going and never stop kicking & punching along the way!

What is the one "free advice" that you've received in your journey so far? One that was so silly that you almost laughed out loud? Let me know below on our Facebook Page or, if it's easier, you can find me on Instagram (just tap @detailmovement) and share your wisdom with me. Cannot wait to hear all about it!!!
