How to make a different kind of Christmas Decoration
As the Holiday season is fast approaching, I found myself in search of Christmas decorations. I know that there are many options out there from which to choose from, but I wanted something a bit more personal this year. I had some wooden sticks leftovers from an essential oil gift that I received a couple of months ago (from a friend). I felt it would be a shame to throw them away, so I decided to vamp them up a bit instead. After all, the Holidays are the perfect season to do so. And do it inexpensively. Perfect right?
So if you want to have these beauties around your flat this Christmas, here's my little DIY project on how to make metallic wooden sticks decorations. Don't forget to put some Carols on, to better get in the mood ;)
Here is what you'll need:
- WOODEN STICKS. These can be anything from essential oil pack to ice creams or other things that you may have around the house. It depends on what objects you want to repurpose. As an alternative, you can always get some from online shops. Amazon has quite a big range.
- ACRYLIC PAINTS. You can also buy these from any stationary or specialised painting shops. I bought my paints from WHSmisth for £2.99 each. I got the Copper Acrylic paint, Mars Black and Gold Acrylic.
- A BRUSH.
- A PLATE on which to mix the paint (in case you want to).
- A SHEET OF PAPER to protect the surface that you are painting on, because you know....things might get messy.
You can sense that I am in Holiday mood. I've even managed to decorate a simple photo of the things you need for a simple DIY. I regret nothing!
1. You need to divide your sticks into groups and think of the overall look you want to achieve.
Think about the proportion of colour you wish to go for. Do you want most of them to be a single colour and a few different, or you just want all of them to be the same? For example, I had 10 sticks and 3 colours: copper, black and gold. I decided that I want the majority of them to be gold, followed by copper and have some black ones as an accent. So, I went for 5 golden sticks, 3 copper and 2 black ones. Of course, you can have more than 10 pieces and colours. It's up to you really, the world is your oyster!
2. The next step is easy (and messy).
You put some music on, for atmosphere obviously, take a stick, get the paint brush and start having some fun!!! I found that at least two layers of paint really get the colour popping. Also, don't forget to paint the top & bottom, for they will also be visible.
After all the work is finished, take a moment to admire your subconscious artist/painter within, because for sure you've created a piece of art on your protection paper. I was astonished how abstract mine was! :)
3. Leave them to dry.
The next step is to leave the sticks out to dry. Depending on what you bought, it may take longer for them to dry (because of the surface). But, I think an hour is just about the right amount of time. And the floor is a fine place for them.
I couldn't help myself with this shot. I mean just look at that colour contrast (and it was cloudy outside)! These will do just fine for the next month. They will bring colour inside the flat regardless of the weather.
4. The final step
After the sticks are dry...and you are done admiring them, you can start getting busy with styling. You can hang them around the flat or in your Christmas Tree, have them in a small vase or whatever idea comes to your mind.
I had a small wooden cup (again from that essential oil kit), which I used on my window sill, next to my small "garden" (more like 2 plants really). I am thinking of relocating them, once my Xmas Tree is up, and see from which spot they would compliment the tree in the best way.
So there you have it peeps. A super easy DIY for a simple Christmas Decoration. You can do this so fast and so inexpensively that it's almost a shame not to do it. You can even do this with your kids, or with your significant other (although I doubt they'de be into this if DIY is not their thing). Alas, we must go on nonetheless.
So get your crafting hat on, put some Christmas Carols on, have a glass of your favourite drink and have some fun!
